Really resonates with me. I’m a confirmed introvert. An introvert the way the Pope is Catholic. I crave quiet. I’m happiest sitting alone with a book and a glass of wine at twilight. But for 30 years I served as the Executive Director/CEO of a number prominent performing arts organizations. I was “on” almost constantly. Giving speeches. Mingling with donors at intermission. Hosting fundraising galas. Greeting patrons in the lobby. And backstage greeting some of the greatest artists of the era - Yitzhak Perlman, Renee Fleming, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Baryshnikov. At the end of the night I’d go home and collapse. I needed every possible moment to recharge. The world saw me as a charming extrovert. No one ever suspected the truth. I loved my work but it was so oddly against my nature. I think now that perhaps it gave me a critical balance and kept me from being either a hermit or a grandstander.
