I feel like I haven’t given enough of a spotlight in this newsletter to my podcast, SOUTHBOUND. We’re coming up on 200 episodes and I really enjoy talking to Southerners of all stripes week after week. So starting with this episode I’m going to send out a little note when each new episode comes out, every other Wednesday, in hopes those of you who don’t already listen might give it a try.
Today’s guest is Jeremy Markovich, owner and operator of the fantastic newsletter North Carolina Rabbit Hole. I wish every state had one of these, but not every state has a Jeremy—a smart and dogged reporter who chases down fascinating bits of N.C. ephemera.
Listen on:
(FYI, if you’re interested in diving into the archives, Apple and Spotify carry the last 20 episodes and WFAE has everything back to the beginning.)
Topics on today’s show include:
A weird Fleetwood Mac song from 1973 with a North Carolina reference
How Jeremy connected skateboarding legend Tony Hawk with a woman in a 45-year-old photo
That time nobody noticed Mick Jagger at a dive bar in Charlotte
The guy who clogged like James Brown and went viral
Why Steven Spielberg was photographed wearing a N.C. Highway Patrol trucker hat
We also had a discussion about the Winston Weiner, but sadly I ended up cutting that part. Maybe we’ll do a director’s cut someday. (On reflection, those sentences sound awkward.)
Now that you’ve come this far, BONUS MUSIC:
My good friend Tom Lake is a gifted writer and a devoted dad. He and his family formed a band and just put out a new single and video called “Lost and Found.” This one did my heart good and I hope it does the same for you.
Love that song. Definitely an ear worm for me and Like Charlene Darling so often said on the Andy Griffith show…Don’t play that one Pa…that one makes me 😢
