SOOOO agree. No app refrig and washer and dishwasher which does leak on a certain setting. Still the old dryer is humming but one day there will be an app for that!

We bought a new washer and dryer a couple years ago. They have smart features, apparently. But we never use them.

My electric razor has an app, no idea what the benefit might be. I refuse to download it.

I mean, if it could trim your beard while you slept or something ... :)

This is hysterical…I laugher out loud at least 5 times while reading it…and it is so true. Everything goes wrong on new appliances, while the old ones seem to last forever…

Bull Durham #1 - YES! Loved the fridge article - so funny and true.

Bull Durham is unbeatable.

How to bypass google a. i. function in search:

https://tenbluelinks.org/

It works and is, I think, a new option. Traditional search and presentation with no rainbow wand and glitter.

There is also "search term here" -ai, in which you search for MyName and then type -ai - but I will be checking out your site as well.

Thanks to both of you for this!

I bought a new stove (after the one left in the house I bought died 3 days after we moved in). I was not aware of the need to buy one without an app. I never knew there was such a thing. 🤯 I had new floors laid and the stove has never had the right time since. The app won’t sync back up, even though I’ve restarted the internet, thrown the breakers, etc. I now just live with a clock that is perpetually 4 hrs and 12 minutes off. I bought a new washer, too. It replaced one I’d had for 25+ years. It’s 3 years old and, while it has no app, it does have a motherboard that costs more to replace than a new washer - really. I’m looking for one of those guys driving around with a bunch of washers and dryers in the back of his truck. You know he’s got an old one he’s fixed up and that will last another 10 years.

Guy In A Truck! I'd buy stuff from him :)

It's very good and Walter Matthau is fantastic.

Am grieving for loss of my 15 year old cocker spaniel Doodle a few weeks ago. We shared the death of my husband, a bear attack, losing almost everything to hurricane Helene flood in Old Fort NC, resettlement in Tennessee. I look for her in every shadow. I've lost many dogs in my long life. Every one was the best dog ever.

Kay Starnes's avatar

I’m very sorry, Toni. I know exactly how much that hurts.

Toni Rhegness's avatar

Thanks..not everyone gets it.

Tommy Tomlinson's avatar

So sorry to hear this, Toni. They're all good dogs.

At the very real risk of joining you in GeezerLand, while I like my gear and smart toys, when it comes to appliances, the dumber the better. The only way these tools have a fighting chance of lasting a decade or longer is if they aren't reliant on delicate and rapidly-obsolescing electronics. It's hard to find completely dumb appliances; even our eight-year-old gas range has an oven that can't be used in power outages, something about the electronic ignition and safety and I don't know what else, though the stovetop is safe for manual lighting with matches, which I was relieved to find could still be purchased. We moved to solar last year and we really should replace it with an induction range, except... electronics. I suppose we could just wait until the range's electronic control panel dies (as it is sure to do, long before its mechanical parts wear out) and then accept the inevitable.

This is part of what I don't like about the newer stuff ... you just feel kind of defeated when you try to work around it.

Our fridge is 21. The ice maker quit a decade ago and they no longer make the filter for the water dispenser. We are doing fine with ice cube trays. When it’s life is over, the new one will have a bigger freezer section, but we are with you on the apps. Sometimes simple is best.

Tommy Tomlinson's avatar

We should have held out for the ice cube trays!

So agree on the fridge. We are moving in a month and need a fridge. Looking at standard fridge with bottom freezer, dumb as they come. More bells and whistles, more breakdowns.

Jennifer DAlessandro's avatar

We had to buy a new fridge last year and also shopped around for a dumb one!

And I've had the same thing happen to me with Yelp. It's funny to keep getting restaurant recommendations that are a thousand miles away.

Tommy Tomlinson's avatar

I just got one yesterday for a new restaurant in Omena!

We had our fridge 35 years and our son said Whirlpool probably would want it for their museum.

completely agree about apps!

I like your list of baseball movies and I would add The Natural.

A bucket list item was checked off my list Tuesday night when we saw the Cubs play The White Sox in Wrigley Field! We’re Reds fans, but I’ve always wanted to see that cross town rivalry in Wrigley. It did not disappoint! ⚾️

Tommy Tomlinson's avatar

How cool! Wrigley is amazing. I went there with a buddy long ago and it was one of the best days I've ever had.

So agree on dumb Fridge! Hope you enjoyed your time in Michigan. I would have said hello if you drove through! It’s beautiful up there!

Tommy Tomlinson's avatar

Oh man, we loved Michigan. We might be back next summer!

Try Mackinac Island! A real gem!

Tommy, this song always reminds me of you and your piece on losing a dog. Perfect song track for it.

Tommy, could not agree more. Apps are fine. Not necessary for most of life. And I truly miss parking meters

Parking meters were so simple!
